George Fox University
Although King’s Way students are just finishing up the second semester, seniors have many additional deadlines coming up with college application due dates steadily approaching. The decision for where to go to college is a monumental one and cannot be decided quickly. To help out some seniors, here is a possible option: George Fox University. Located in Newburg, Oregon, this college was founded in 1891 and is a private Christian institution. They also have two campuses other than their main one – one in Portland and the another in Redmond. Mrs. Anne Hall says, “They are known for their evangelical Christianity.”
George Fox offers a large array of subjects, having more than 60 programs to choose from. Mrs. Hall states that “they have great teaching, nursing, engineering, health care, education and business programs.” As for athletics, they participate in 23 intercollegiate sports and compete on a Division III level. Gabby Hill, a former Kings Way student who now attends George Fox, just competed at Nationals for cheerleading, placing 2nd. In an interview with Gabby, she says, “I think we have a lot. We do sports and clubs, rec sports… you can play intramural sports… ” George Fox also has 50 organized clubs to choose from. The main campus is also located in an area that has a lot of fun activities students can participate in when students are not in class. Gabby says, “Campus life is really fun; you have to do it but when you do it’s really fun…”
When asked what her favorite part about attending George Fox was, Gabby said, “I think it would be the culture – the relationship between the students and teachers. I really enjoy getting to know my professors in a really personal way and knowing that they’re rooting for me.” George Fox has a student to teacher ratio of 16:1, making it possible for the class to be, as Gabby stated, very “personal.” In all, George Fox has around 4,000 students. In an interview with Ella Rounsley, a student currently attending King’s Way and who has applied and been accepted to George Fox, she says, “The first time I heard about George Fox was two years ago. Kings Way’s senior goalie was planning on going to George Fox, and I never thought anything of it. Then, at the end of my Junior year, I heard a little more about it through more King’s Way students planning on going there and that King’s Way was recommending George Fox. What stood out to me was their slogan and how they lived it too. Their slogan is ‘You Will Be Known’. When I was taking my first tour, everyone was so kind and they seemed like they actually wanted to know me.” At George Fox, religion plays a big part in both student culture and academics. Ella says, “What made me choose George Fox was how comfortable I felt there and how much there value my relationship with Jesus. Not only do I feel safe on the campus” but “I’m close to home. I can tell that going there I will not only learn academically but in my relationship with Jesus.” Investigating different colleges is something that most people will eventually have to do. As students look for their right match, consider, perhaps, George Fox University.
