Question: How do people know God is real?
Pastor Paris’s Answer: Romans 1:19-21 tells us that we can all clearly see God’s invisible qualities. The Bible says, His invisible qualities are His eternal power and divine nature. Think about what kind of knowledge someone would need to have to tilt the earth at just the perfect angle. Or what kind of knowledge they would need to have to place the earth exactly a certain distance from the sun, so it’s not too hot or too cold and life can grow here on earth. These are the kinds of things that God’s “eternal power” and “divine nature” look like. It’s God’s knowledge and wisdom to make all of this (look around) possible.
Psalm 19:1-2 tells us that, “the heavens display the works of God.” If we are looking for God and open to everything around us, we can perceive that there is a creator who is good. The Bible also tells us that it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance (asking for forgiveness), or to the place where we want Him and whatever He wants for us instead of our own ways.
Mr. Johnson’s Answer: When by God’s grace, He will open our hearts to the truth of the gospel. God’s power is shown in all of his creation and is known to all people. Because of our sinful nature, we do not recognize, without God’s grace, that there is a creator. When we recognize God’s creation, we can also recognize God’s nature and that His creation was good. Understanding our Lord’s nature and character is part of how we grow in our relationship with Him and can become a witness to all of His creation as a new creation we have become by His grace.
